Stop the Clunk: Universal Joints (U-Joints)
A "clunk" when you put the car in gear or a vibration felt through the seat usually points to worn Universal Joints. These cross-shaped bearings allow your driveshaft to flex with the suspension.
Quality Bearings
Greasable: Features a Zerk fitting allowing you to add fresh grease (great for serviceability).
Solid (Non-Greasable): Often stronger for high-performance applications as they lack the drilled grease channels.
Brands: High-strength units from Spicer, Precision, and Moog to fit vintage yokes.
Smooth Power Delivery: Drive Shaft Supports & Yokes
Vibration at highway speeds? A clunk when shifting from Park to Drive? Check your driveshaft. While U-Joints are the common fix, the supporting hardware is often overlooked.
Crucial Components:
Center Support Bearings: (Carrier Bearings) Essential for trucks and cars with two-piece driveshafts (like the Chevy Impala). If the rubber isolator is torn, the shaft will whip.
Slip Yokes: The splined end that slides into the transmission. Worn yokes cause leaks and vibration.
